Product Description

The Printrbot Simple XL upgrade kit extends the build volume of a Printrbot Simple 3D printer (sold separately) to maximum dimensions of 7.28 x 3.9 x 6.5 inches/185 x 100 x165 mm (H x W x D). The kit, which requires assembly, includes laser-cut birch wood parts, metal rods, and a Y-motor extension to assemble a tower that extends build dimensions and helps provide additional rigidity. The tower includes removable wide-stance feet and a handle cutout for portability. Parts are also included to assemble a small filament spool and spool coaster to hold filament (sold separately).

Objects created by additive manufacturing are built by dispensing successive thin layers of molten material onto a moving platform base from a robotic extruder nozzle. The material is most commonly a thermoplastic or HDPE (high-density polyethylene) filament.

I would recommend this kit to anyone

I would recommend this kit to anyone who is buying Printrbot SImple. Kit increases print volume from 4"x4"x"4" inches to 7.5X4"X6.5". This allows you to print much larger and more complicated objects. After installing this kit I was able to print a number of the objects that I haven't been able to print before. I think Printrbot should offer a different kit - Printrbot Simple XL kit, with the kit in the set for about $350. Now I am able to print a number of complex models from Thingiverse.com like a Dragon Castle. It took me about an hour to install the kit on my Printrbot Simple. I would say that anyone who built the Printrbot Simple from a kit will be able to do it in less than an hour. I was also taking my time - I was not using any power tools when assembling the kit. Printrbot provides a good video on how to put a kit together. As a bonus you also get a spool which enables you to organize your PLA and make sure that you don't have any PLA tangles :).

Great buy if you enjoy your Simple

This upgrade is a great value for what it allows you to do; you can print much larger objects and putting it together is extremely easy. If you bought your printer assembled, then this also allows you to get to know how it works from the inside better, which is a plus. Also, the included spool is great for organizing that mess of natural PLA that came with the printer...

If you built the kit you know what to expect - great addition

I followed the directions for the order to do things ...for the most part. The build volume upgrade is relatively easy. Annoying at times, but no big issues. The attachment of the tower altogether is a pain, as there are screws that need to be removed and replaced by longer ones. Of course the nuts want to fall off and are nearly impossible to get back in to position them. Hammering the spool holder onto the top of the long Z rods is scary. It did a little repairable damage to the base. Tip: support the printer by the rod you're hammering above - not by setting it on something. Overall, a great addition. Double the build volume (appx), and the tower adds a lot of support structure to the whole printer. A good investment to be sure.
