The UP! Mini 3D desktop printer has an all-metal enclosure and fabricates objects using 1.75 mm ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or PLA (polylactic acid) thermoplastic filament (sold separately), with a vertical resolution from 200 to 400 microns (0.20 to 0.40 mm). The printer can build objects to maximum dimensions of 4.75 x 4.75 x 4.75 inches/120 x 120 x 120 mm (H x W x D). The included printer management software runs on a Windows or Mac OS X computer, reads Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files generated by computer-aided design (CAD) software (sold separately) and commands the printer through the provided USB cable.
The enclosure guards against room drafts to help minimize temperature fluctuation, and helps reduce operational noise and odor. A build platform heats to 51.4 degrees C to help provide thermal stability. A perforated cell board is held to the platform by full-side mounting channels for a secure fabrication base. Solid metal guide rails and precision slide bearings help ensure precise movement. The belt-driven stepper motors meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standard ICS 16-2001.

4The support through x-object makes all the difference! Good Value!

First, a few things about me. I am an industrial designer and have been using 3d printers for over 5 years at my job. I have been watching the prices come down slowly on Filament based printers for personal use and finally found this one to be the best value in a preassembled unit. I have been pleased with the print quality and the software. I couldn't give the printer 5 stars because I am having an issue with the filament randomly not feeding during a print but I'm not worried about this because the support that I have received in the past has been great. A couple weeks after I got the printer and had already printed several objects, I found that I needed to move the printer to my house from work. I started my first print job at home and I went to check on the progress and the static spark from my fingers must have fried one of the computer components because the unit shut off suddenly. I was distraught but after logging into the x-object support help desk on their website and asking for help, they sent me out a new unit! I just put the old one in the replacement's shipping box and printed the shipping label they emailed me and dropped it off at the UPS store. The new one hasn't had the same problem with static electricity and I have been printing successfully ever since. I will be resolving the current issue soon and I will comment on this review once that it is fixed.

A note: 3d printers seem to always have some sort of glitch here and there because they are complex systems. We have a Stratasys Fortus 400mc at work which cost easily 100k and we have to have a maintenance contract on it to keep it running. The tech guys have to come out yearly and sometimes more because of how many things can go wrong with these units. I am glad that x-object has been there to provide the much needed service part of the printer. I don't know how the rest of the industry is with their service but this has been my experience. I would have rated this much lower without the x-object services.

23rd updated review after lots of use

The quality of the print with the Up Mini is very good. One of the best things about it is that the start and stop point of each layer is not at the same place so you don't get a "stitch" line on round objects like you do with other printers. This is the fourth model of 3D printer I've used.

The software it comes with is good, but is limited to setting you can apply such as head temperature and bed temperature settings. But, it's very easy to use.

I have 2 of these printers and have the same problem with both of them, so I believe it's a design weakness: The feed gear in the head isn't very robust and doesn't always feed the filament well. I've tried over 50 different rolls of filament and on both printers and have the same problem with both. Neither of my printers will feed PLA filament at all. It just makes a clicking sound and doesn't feed, so you can't get a print. For this reason only, I would not recommend the printer until they upgrade the print head feed gear mechanism.

I've got several Flashforge printers and they ALL work really well and I've never had a problem with feeding. So, for just a few dollars more, I'd get the Flashforge and you can feed ANY 1.75mm filament with it and get a bigger build plane.

5Glad I purchased this printer!

While my primary reason for choosing this particular printer was a combination of quality and the enclosed and therefore, semi-environmentally protected print area, this little unit provides out of the box printing. Needless to say, I have been having a blast printing various items.

That being said, and why I deducted two stars.

-½ star due to the fact that there seems to be no way to center the print table. Mine, for some reason, is off center on the X-axis (prints too close to the front), which in turn results in larger models curling. To correct this, I have to manually move the heating table to center, during the table height calibration process. Once set, I have been able to print several models without a hitch.

- 1½ star due to their horrendous warranty setup. For example, I have been trying to register my product for the past week, and have been thus far, unsuccessful. On their site, it says you have to register within 7 days or your warranty will be voided. And yet they provide no means to register the product.

Update: I finally was able to find the correct person to contact. Since I purchased this item through Amazon, I had to register it through http://www.up3dusa.com/ (as opposed to pp3dp.com, which the box says). The up3dusa.com site actually has a registration link under the support tab. It also contains links to not only the 3d test print bunny but the manual, software, and windoze drivers. Still working on the x-axis alignment but that has not been a serious hindrance.

That said, I love love love this printer! While it did make top ten in the maker magazine, and even then was a bit far down their list, this printer is literally an out-of-the box setup. The design is very modern (almost looks like a kitchen appliance), and the enclosed chamber seems to keep the ambient temperature stable, thereby increasing good prints.

One thing I have learned since I've been printing for the past two weeks.... since the minimum extruder print size is 2mm, trying to print tiny, detailed objects will not yield good results. The best way to determine whether your object is printable, is to consider the smallest feature. If it's 5 or less mm range, you probably won't get decent results. Large objects however, print superbly!
